Project Care Volunteer Services

The Tompkins County Office for the Aging has an active group of volunteers who serve frail or isolated seniors in their homes. This program is called: Project Care.

Project Care began in 1985. Volunteers from the community began meeting with isolated seniors on a regular basis to provide companionship, respite for caregivers, or help with household chores and errands.

Today, this vibrant program includes both a community-based and college-based volunteer experience. Students from Ithaca College and Cornell University are matched with area seniors to provide in-home contact and friendly visits. The partnership between college students and area seniors is called Project Generations. Community-based volunteers live within the community and also provide in-home contact and friendly visits.

An Aging Services Specialist at the Tompkins County Office for the Aging screens both volunteers and seniors to ensure the experience will be beneficial to everyone.
