Understanding “Ban the Box”: Creating a Fair Chance

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

The Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County Sponsors Forum March 10

On March 10, The Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County will sponsor a free forum entitled Understanding “Ban the Box”: Creating a Fair Chance.

The two-hour forum will begin at 9:30 a.m., at the Borg Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library, 101 E. Green Street, Ithaca.

The forum will bring together panelists from a cross section of professions to provide the opportunity for business owners, organizations, and individuals to learn more about removing employment application “check-box” questions regarding criminal records, and delaying the background check inquiry until later in the hiring process.

Panelists representing government, academia, law, small business, and non-profits will discuss the ramifications of prematurely or illegally considering conviction information, and the role it may play in preventing people with past convictions from receiving a fair chance at employment.

Questions will be addressed by panel members who have implemented “Ban the Box” at their workplaces; who have had experience with the criminal justice system; or who are working to support those who are re-entering the community and seeking to be productive citizens.

Admission is free. Due to limited seating, registration is encouraged. To register, visit www.hsctc.org/workshops or call 607-273-8686.

The Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County is sponsoring this forum in cooperation with the Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County to support efforts to ensure that people formerly involved with the criminal justice system are welcomed back to the community and given a fair chance to work.
