April 3, 2022 - Grand Larceny Arrest

On March 30, 2022 at 2:51 PM, Tompkins County Sheriff's Deputies interviewed the victim of a theft that occurred at BJs Wholesale, 40 Graham Road in the Village of Lansing. The victim reported to Deputies that while pumping gas approximately two hours prior to contacting police, he accidentally left his wallet on top of the gas pumps. The victim stated that he discovered the wallet was missing when he arrived home, called BJs Wholesale immediately and when they checked had discovered someone had already taken the wallet.

After taking the initial report, deputies responded to BJs Wholesale and observed a white male on video surveillance taking the wallet from the top of the gas pumps and putting it into his pocket. The male then leaves and never turns the wallet into police or the gas attendant. Deputies were able to identify the suspect with assistance from BJ's staff and the video surveillance.

On April 3, 2022 at approximately 11:30 AM, Deputies responded to an address on Bone Plain Road, Town of Dryden and interviewed the suspect they believed was in the video surveillance stealing the wallet. The suspect was identified as John W. Mainville, age 57 of Freeville, NY. Mainville admitted to deputies that he had stolen the wallet and further threw the majority of the wallet away in a trash can at a Burger King in Tully, NY. Deputies arrested and charged Mainville with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree (Class E Felony). Mainville was released on an appearance ticket in compliance with NYS Bail Reform Laws. Mainville is scheduled to appear at the Town of Lansing Court on April 21, 2022 at 2:00 PM.
