March 28, 2022 - Shots Fired Arrest

On March 28, 2022 at 11:39 PM, Tompkins County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 2303 N. Triphammer Road, the Econo Lodge, for a report of shots fired.

Upon arrival deputies located a red Jeep backing into a parking spot in the rear lot of the hotel. When marked Sheriff's Patrol Units drove toward the Jeep, the Jeep attempted to pull out of the parking spot. Deputies approached the Jeep to inquire if the occupants had heard the gun shots. While interviewing both occupants of the Jeep deputies observed ammunition in the center console near the cup holders and a rifle in plain view laying on the rear seat.

The driver of the Jeep was identified as Anthony H. Coyne, age 25 of Ithaca, NY and the passenger was identified as Leigha M. Briggs, age 22 of Ithaca, NY. During the investigation Briggs admitted to discharging the rifle into the air for no purpose. Coyne was found to have a previous felony conviction which prohibited Coyne from possessing a firearm.

Coyne was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (Class D Felony). Briggs was arrested and charged with Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree (Class A Misdemeanor). Briggs was released on an appearance ticket. Coyne was held for arraignment and subsequently released on his own recognizances by the arraigning judge.

The previous night, March 27, 2022, NYS Police and Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies responded to the same location for a shots fired call. Upon canvassing the area, it was discovered that a rifle round had exited the Econo Lodge and entered a neighboring business. No injuries were reported and no suspects identified. That investigation is still ongoing at this time. The NYS Police are the primary investigating agency. Any further inquiries into that incident should be directed to the NY Police.

Criminal Trespass Arrest- March 29, 2022 On March 29, 2022 at 10:30 AM, Tompkins County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 2303 N. Triphammer Road, the Econo Lodge, for a report of a trespass complaint.

Upon arrival deputies spoke with hotel staff who said that Anthony H. Coyne was on the property after he was previously issued trespass warnings. Coyne was trespassed due to his involvement with the Shots Fired complaint at the Econo Lodge the night of March 28, 2022. Deputies arrested Anthony H. Coyne, age 25 of Ithaca, NY for Criminal Trespass (Class A Misdemeanor). Coyne was issued an appearance ticket in accordance with New York State Bail Reform Laws.
