Our Mission...

Curb Your Car Coalition is a group of community organizations and individuals working toward sensible and appropriate transportation options to reduce car use. The Coalition seeks environmental, health and safety, social and economic benefits for Tompkins County through education, planning, policy and implementation.  Our goals are:

  • To move people out of their automobiles for health and environmental benefits;
  • To promote community and connectedness;
  • To provide education;
  • To help people overcome obstacles to using alternatives modes of transportation;
  • To address safety issues;
  • To promote walkable communities.

Profiles...

Curbing Your Car is a practical, easy decision.  Your fellow community members are already part of the movement.  Here they introduce themselves and explain why car-free is the way to go.

Background...

Ithaca residents aren't the first to curb our cars--inspiration for the local coalition came from existing Curb Your Car initiatives, including those in Burlington, Vermont, mentioned in a June 20, 2002 Ithaca Journal editorial. Similar events worldwide include “In Town Without My Car!” initiatives, European Mobility Week (www.mobilityweek-europe.org), and UN-supported Car Free Days annually on September 22 (www.uncfd.org). A full 96% of visitors to UK “In Town Without My Car!” events said they were a good idea, with 97% wanting the event to be held at least annually; almost half liked it so much they wanted a monthly event.

Earth Day efforts have also embraced Car Free Days, promoting them as “a pattern break” that doesn't “aim to take all cars off the streets as a long-term solution; instead, they encourage people to think about the impact of their transport choices and how cleaner, more effective forms of transportation can enhance our quality of life.” (www.earthday.net/goals/carfreeday.htm).
