Incident at Tompkins County Correctional Facility Promptly Resolved

At approximately 4:25 PM on July 15, 2025, a significant amount of smoke was detected within the Tompkins County Correctional Facility. In accordance with established emergency response protocols, Corrections Officers swiftly evacuated all incarcerated individuals to ensure their safety.

 

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office was supported on scene by the Lansing Fire Department, Cayuga Heights Fire Department, Airport Fire, and Bangs Ambulance. Emergency personnel worked quickly to assess and address the situation. The facility was cleared, and incarcerated individuals were safely returned to their housing areas approximately 45 minutes later.

 

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident. Upon investigation, it was determined that the smoke was caused by a faulty heat pump.
