TCEH Seeks Information About a Dog Bite at Taughannock State Park TCWH EH must locate a dog that bit a person on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at approximately 10:30AM, in the North Point area of Taughannock State Park (1740 Taughannock Blvd, Trumansburg). The person was bit as they assisted in capturing a dog that had escaped the dog’s sitter.

Health Alert: Local Rise in Whooping Cough & Walking Pneumonia Cases (11/6/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the community to a recent increase in the number of people becoming ill from two different bacterial respiratory illnesses: Pertussis (commonly known as Whooping Cough), and M. pneumoniae (commonly known as Walking Pneumonia).
Health Alert: E. coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots (11/19/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the community to a recall on multiple sizes and brands of organic whole and baby carrots which were sold at grocery stores in our region (including Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, Tops and GreenStar Food Co-op). The carrots have been linked to an outbreak of E. coli from bagged organic whole and baby carrots from a single supplier.
Health Alert: TCEH Seeks Info About a Dog Bite (11/12/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health’s Environmental Health Division (EH) must locate a dog that bit a person on Monday, November 11, 2024, at approximately 3:15 PM, near the UPS Store at 407 College Avenue, Ithaca. The person was bit on their hand and ankle when they retrieved a glove they had dropped. EH seeks to verify the biting dog’s vaccination status.

Juneteenth Closing and Recycling Pickup Schedule

The Tompkins County Department of Recycling and Materials Management (TCRMM) office will be closed Friday, June 19th, and will reopen Monday, June 22nd, during regular hours. However, the Recycling and Solid Waste Center (RSWC) will remain open as usual on Friday, June 19th.

Health Alert: Rabid Bat Found on Cascadilla Gorge Trail (College Ave.)

Tompkins County Environmental Health is reporting that a bat found along the Cascadilla Gorge Trail, close to College Ave. (Ithaca) on Thursday, June 4, 2026, was determined to be rabid by the New York State Rabies Laboratory.

At this time, there have been no reports of human contact with this bat. If you, your pets, or someone you know, have had contact with a bat, please call EH: 607-274-6688.

Health Alert: EH Seeks Info About a Dog Bite on 5 Mile Drive (Ithaca)

TCWH's EH must locate a dog that bit a person on Sunday, June 7, 2026, around 2:00pm, along the 600 block of Five Mile Drive (NYS Route 13-A), Ithaca. The person was bit while attempting to break up a dog fight. The biting dog is described as a black lab mix, roughly 40-50lbs with short legs.

Office for the Aging honors volunteers, advocates at annual luncheon

The Tompkins County Office for the Aging (COFA) celebrated the dedication and service of local volunteers during its Annual Luncheon, held on May 15 at Hotel Ithaca. More than 75 community members attended the event. The luncheon recognized individuals whose commitment to service has strengthened the lives of older adults and the broader Tompkins County community.
