TCEH Seeks Information About a Dog Bite at Taughannock State Park TCWH EH must locate a dog that bit a person on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at approximately 10:30AM, in the North Point area of Taughannock State Park (1740 Taughannock Blvd, Trumansburg). The person was bit as they assisted in capturing a dog that had escaped the dog’s sitter.

Health Alert: Local Rise in Whooping Cough & Walking Pneumonia Cases (11/6/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the community to a recent increase in the number of people becoming ill from two different bacterial respiratory illnesses: Pertussis (commonly known as Whooping Cough), and M. pneumoniae (commonly known as Walking Pneumonia).
Health Alert: E. coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots (11/19/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the community to a recall on multiple sizes and brands of organic whole and baby carrots which were sold at grocery stores in our region (including Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, Tops and GreenStar Food Co-op). The carrots have been linked to an outbreak of E. coli from bagged organic whole and baby carrots from a single supplier.
Health Alert: TCEH Seeks Info About a Dog Bite (11/12/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health’s Environmental Health Division (EH) must locate a dog that bit a person on Monday, November 11, 2024, at approximately 3:15 PM, near the UPS Store at 407 College Avenue, Ithaca. The person was bit on their hand and ankle when they retrieved a glove they had dropped. EH seeks to verify the biting dog’s vaccination status.
TCWH Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of the C.A.R.E. Team (11/4/2024) In August 2023, the C.A.R.E. Team (Crisis Alternative Response and Engagement), a co-response partnership between Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, was launched as an effort to divert community members from the criminal justice system in response to crisis calls.

Tompkins County Data Shows Decrease in Unintentional Fatal Overdoses

Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is reporting a decrease in fatal drug overdoses for the first six months of 2025. From January through June 2025, Tompkins County Medical Examiner reported three (3) unintentional fatal overdoses, representing a 77% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. In NYS, unintentional overdose deaths down 32% for all drugs and 38% for opioids.

Health Alert: Rabid Bat Found at Buttermilk Falls State Park

Tompkins County Whole Health (TCHW) is reporting that a bat found approximately 50 meters away from the swimming area on Lower Buttermilk Gorge Trail at Buttermilk Falls State Park, in Ithaca, NY on Friday, 8/22/2025, was determined to be rabid by the New York State Rabies Laboratory. The bat was reportedly first seen on the ground at around 11:30AM and was later removed by staff around 1:00PM.

One more week of public input for Center of Government design options

The survey is open until Friday, August 29. This second round of community feedback allows residents to evaluate and compare multiple design options that were created considering department needs, service delivery, and community input. Resident preferences will be captured for each presented option, and pros and cons will be documented to inform the final design.

Tompkins County is excited to announce an expansion of its Business Energy Advisors (BEA) program, introducing specialized energy consulting services for nonprofit organizations. This new initiative adds to the BEA program’s existing suite of services, offering additional, dedicated support to help nonprofits in existing buildings plan cost-effective energy upgrades and reduce operating costs.
