Families, Children & Youth
RAISING a family takes a village. TCWH services support the care of children, youth, and their families. Programs provide care and support before, during and after pregnancy, and for children in their growth and development, including immunizations, nutrition education and breastfeeding support, mental health services, speech therapy, and physical therapy.

Mental health is integral to well-being. TCWH provides mental health services for adults, including counseling, medication assisted therapy or management, and group programs. On-site clinics provide immunizations for uninsured and underinsured adults.

Whole Health supports a healthy community for all Tompkins County residents. Our programs bring prevention measures to homes and public places through education and policy. Community health workers go directly to residents and community groups to provide on-going connection and support.

ENVIRONMENTAL Health supports overall community wellness and public safety. The Environmental Health team -inspects and issues operating permits for all food served to the public, public pools and summer camps, public water supplies and residential septic systems, clean indoor air, and tobacco retailers to prevent underage sales. They are on call 24/7, responding to emergency needs such as exposure to rabies or other environmental hazards.

TOMPKINS County Whole Health embraces the County’s vision for continued education and implementation of DEIB initiatives to advance health equity. Our Community Health Improvement Plan identifies health disparities and opportunities to inform programs and services.

Tompkins County Whole Health Releases “COVID-19 Community Resilience Mural” Video, Shares Launch Event Highlights
(9/6/2024) On Thursday, August 29, 2024, to commemorate the conclusion of National Immunization Awareness Month, Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) hosted a gathering at the “COVID-19 Community Resilience Mural”, located along the Albany St. side of the Human Services Annex building at 214 W. Martin Luther King Jr./State St., Ithaca. This event brought together partners from our local healthcare system, higher education institutions, community agencies and county administration to celebrate the mural’s completion and advocate for continued partnership in county-wide vaccination efforts. The event offered an opportunity for community partners to reflect on their partnership and efforts during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A video documenting the process of the mural was launched during this event. This video, created by Shira Evergreen of Uplifted Ithaca, incorporates visuals of the mural’s development along with interviews featuring staff from TCWH and Tompkins County Office for the Aging, and Ithaca Murals. Millicent Clarke-Maynard, retired Ithaca City School District teacher, was featured in the mural.
“This mural illustrates all that we have overcome together as a community. It also reminds us of the things we must do to keep one another healthy and safe.” said Whole Health Commissioner Frank Kruppa. “We wanted to memorialize the lives that our community lost during the pandemic with part of this mural.”

Tompkins County Whole Health Announces Opportunity to Serve on Board of Health
(9/4/2024) The Tompkins County Board of Health (BOH) has an at-large vacancy and invites interested candidates to apply. The Board encourages applications from individuals with diverse perspectives who seek to engage in public health issues impacting our community. The BOH is a volunteer board that serves as the governing body for the local health department.
Applicants must be 18 years of age, a resident of Tompkins County, and a U.S. citizen. The Board meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month, at noon for approximately one and a half hours at Whole Health’s office building at 55 Brown Road, Ithaca.
Under New York State Public Health Law, the BOH enacts regulations related to the preservation of life and health and confirms the violation of orders and regulations. The Board also oversees the department budget and approves department policy and procedures.

Health Alert: Mpox Cases on Rise, Vaccination Recommended for Those at Risk
(8/26/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is alerting the community to a rise in mpox cases, including a newly identified strain. On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global public health emergency regarding a new outbreak of mpox, originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). With international travel to our region increasing during this time of the year, it is essential that we take a proactive stance at preventing mpox cases in Tompkins County.

National Immunization Awareness Month; Back-to-School Routine Immunization Reminders
(8/8/2024) Tompkins County Whole Health (TCWH) is joining the nation in celebrating National Immunization Awareness Month this August. This is an annual opportunity for the public health community to encourage everyone to stay up to date on routine immunizations. Immunization is particularly important for infants, school-aged children, people who are pregnant, who are immunocompromised, and who are over the age of 65.
