TCWH internships provide students with hands-on experience working on real-world public health and mental health projects that ultimately benefit the greater Tompkins County community. We have previously hosted student internships in areas ranging from mental health and social work, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children), and hands-on Environmental Health experiences.

Along with the intern’s specific project and day-to-day work, we provide opportunities to expose students to the varied work of TCWH as well as the many career paths in public and mental health. Several interns and ‘fellows’ have gone on to full-time staff roles at the department.

Current Internship Opportunitites

Children & Youth Mental Health Internship

Tompkins County Whole Health is seeking a second-year MSW student for a clinical internship with the Children & Youth Program. The intern will gain hands-on experience providing individual and group therapy to children, youth, and young adults, primarily ages 5–26, at the County Mental Health Clinic and school-based satellite locations. The placement may also include community partnership work and participation in committees focused on improving services for young people.

Applicants should have an interest in working with youth, rural communities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Timeframe: Fall or spring semester, between August 24, 2026, and May 31, 2027
Location: Mental Health Clinic and school district satellite locations

Oral Health and Community Program Development Internship

Tompkins County Whole Health is seeking a graduate-level student or emerging professional interested in oral health, public health, rural communities, and program development. The intern will support the planning of a school-based mobile hygienist program designed to improve access to oral health services in rural communities.

Activities may include developing a program budget, researching and applying for grants, creating policies and procedures with schools and community partners, distributing oral health supplies, and collaborating with the Tompkins County Oral Health Coalition and Whole Health administration.

Timeframe: Fall semester, mid-August through December 2026
