Ithaca Tompkins Airport to add third daily flight to Washington, D.C.
Published on August 14, 2025
Ithaca Tompkins International Airport (ITH) is proud to announce the addition of a third daily flight to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program (SCASD) grant.
The new United Airlines flight, launching in October 2025, will expand options for travelers flying between Ithaca and the D.C. metro area, offering greater flexibility, improved same-day return opportunities, and better access to United’s global network via IAD. This added service builds upon the successful ITH–IAD route launched in March 2025 and now offers morning, afternoon, and evening flights to accommodate all schedules. This enhanced schedule offers unmatched convenience for business travelers, students, and leisure passengers heading to the nation’s capital, while reinforcing ITH’s role as the Finger Lakes region’s premier aviation hub.
The SCASD grant was secured through a collaborative regional effort involving the Tompkins Chamber, Ithaca Area Economic Development, Ithaca College, Cornell University, and the county, recognizing the importance of reliable air service to the economic vitality and accessibility of the region.
“Ithaca, prepare for takeoff because a third daily flight to Washington, DC is coming to Ithaca Tompkins International Airport! Reliable and varied air service options are critical to a vibrant community and a healthy economy. That’s why I worked to deliver federal funds to help ITH secure the return of air service to the Washington, D.C. area,” said Senator Schumer. “When United Airlines paused service to this hub, I urged them to reconsider, and I thank them for making good on their commitment to reinstate this service to Ithaca. This new daily flight means more capacity to meet the demands of its passengers and support the needs of the business community. I look forward to continuing to work with United Airlines and the incredible team at ITH to help Ithaca Tompkins International Airport and the Southern Tier reach new heights.”
“This is a significant win for our community and our travelers,” said Roxan Noble, Director of Ithaca Tompkins International Airport. “The SCASD grant is a vital tool that allows smaller markets like ours to compete and thrive in a competitive air service environment. Adding a third daily flight gives business and leisure travelers even more options and better access to the global network available through Washington Dulles.”
“With this third daily IAD flight, travelers will enjoy more convenient connections to key domestic and international destinations, while also supporting the long-term sustainability of local air service,” stated Lee Shurtleff, Chair of the Tompkins County Facilities and Infrastructure Committee. “As part of ITH’s Sustainable Airport Master Plan, these flights align with Tompkins County’s commitment to eco-friendly travel.”
“We urge Tompkins County residents to invest locally by choosing ITH,” said Korsah Akumfi, Tompkins County Administrator. “Every flight taken from our airport supports our economy, sustains jobs, and fuels future growth. With our recent terminal upgrades, including new jet bridges and enhanced amenities, we’re proud to offer a first-class travel experience right here in Ithaca”.
“Expanded air service is more than just added convenience. It is a strategic investment in Tompkins County’s future,” said Peggy Coleman, President of the Tompkins Chamber. “Air connectivity fuels business growth, attracts investment, supports tourism, and opens doors to new markets, making it a powerful tool for economic development in Tompkins County.”
Ithaca ranked No. 1 on CNN Travel’s 2025 list of Best Towns in America to Visit thanks to “its easy access to nature, vibrant college-town culture, and homegrown flavors.”
