Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office Responds to Email Threats Directed at Local Schools, Officials, and Financial Institutions.
The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of threatening emails sent to several local schools within the county. These messages also contain threats directed toward county employees, elected officials, and local financial institutions.
The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating these threats in coordination with local law enforcement partners and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). At this time, similar threats have been reported in multiple counties across New York State, and law enforcement agencies are working together to identify the source.
Out of an abundance of caution, additional security measures are being implemented at local schools and for those individuals specifically named in the emails.
“Our top priority is the safety of our students, educators, and community members,” said Sheriff Derek R. Osborne. “We are maintaining open communication with our school districts and law enforcement partners as this situation develops.”
The Sheriff’s Office will continue to share updates as new information becomes available.
