The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to prepare for an upcoming winter storm expected to impact our area over the next several days. Forecasts indicate the potential for hazardous travel conditions, including snow, ice, and reduced visibility. Extreme cold is also anticipated.

As a reminder, a travel advisory does not close roads or restrict travel. If you must drive, please use extra caution.

Residents are encouraged to take steps now to prepare:
· Allow extra time for travel and let others know of your planned destination.
· Ensure vehicles are winter-ready, with adequate fuel, tires, and emergency supplies.
· Check on neighbors who may need assistance, especially seniors or those with limited mobility.

Unnecessary travel is strongly discouraged from the time the storm begins Sunday morning through Monday, 01/26/26. If you do not need to be on the roads, please stay home. Limiting traffic helps reduce crashes and allows emergency responders and highway crews to do their jobs safely and efficiently.

If you reside in an area where you can do so, please park your vehicle(s) off the roadway. Keeping roadways clear is critical for snowplows, highway crews, and emergency vehicles to access all areas of the county safely.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation and encourage everyone to prioritize safety.
