Health Alert: Fall 2025 COVID-19 Vaccine Updates

On Friday, September 5, 2025, New York State (NYS) Governor Hochul signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency for the entire state and authorizing licensed physicians, nurse practitioners and pharmacists to prescribe and provide COVID-19 vaccine. You can now go to your primary healthcare provider to request a prescription for vaccination or go directly to the pharmacy.

TCWH EH Seeks Info Dog Bite on Birchwood Drive/Hanshaw Road (Ithaca)

Seeking info re: dog(s) that bit a person and their dog on Sunday, August 31, 2025, between 9am-10am, in the vicinity of 103-105 Birchwood Drive and 1426-1430 Hanshaw Road (Town of Ithaca). The biting dogs ran out from what looked to be the backyard that was in between 103-105 Birchwood Drive, but they also could have come back from the adjoining backyards (either 1426 or 1430 Hanshaw Road).

Advocating to Increase the Personal Needs Allowance in New York State

Advocates for older adults and people with disabilities are calling on New York State lawmakers to raise the Personal Needs Allowance (PNA) for residents residing in nursing facilities. Residents whose nursing home stay is paid for by Medicaid are entitled to a Personal Needs Allowance which is a small portion of the residents’ income that they are allowed to keep to pay for personal expenses.

Highlights of the 9/4/25 Expanded Budget Committee meeting

Following the presentation of the county administrator’s recommended budget on September 2, the first of several scheduled meetings of the Expanded Budget Committee covered the following department budget presentations: County Historian, Board of Elections, Planning and Sustainability, Tourism, Transportation Planning, County Clerk, Legislature & Clerk of the Legislature, and the Capital Plan.

Highlights of the 9/2/25 Tompkins County Legislature meeting

Budget deliberations began with the presentation of the county administrator’s recommended budget, which takes into account the impact of increasing costs for mandates, labor, healthcare, capital investments, and emergency shelter. Uncertainties about the economy and sales tax revenue, and a shrinking fund balance, add to the challenges the county faces in its fiscal planning.

Tompkins County Employees Partner with Red Cross to Host Blood Drive

The Ithaca Tompkins International Airport, along with the Departments of Emergency Response and Whole Health are hosting a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Saturday, September 13th from 10am to 3pm at the Whole Health building (55 Brown Road). The blood drive takes place in conjunction with the 2025 Airport Day and Preparedness Expo.

Citizen Preparedness Training Offered at Ithaca Airport, September 13

The Citizen Preparedness Corps (CPC) gives residents the tools and resources to prepare for any type of disaster or emergency, respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible to pre-disaster conditions.

The next training in Tompkins County will be Saturday, September 13th at 10:00am at the 2025 Airport Day and Preparedness Expo. September is National Preparedness Month.

Featuring: Runway 5k, East Hill Flying Club Pancake Breakfast, a variety of activities & informational displays, health screenings, & blood drive.
