Reusable Bag Distribution

Reusable bags are available to Tompkins-based organizations and agencies

The Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management Department (TCRMM) is pleased to announce that agencies and organizations serving people with limited financial resources are eligible to request a supply of reusable bags to distribute to their clients. Use our online form to request a supply of reusable bags or contact us.

Made with a minimum of 75% post-consumer recycled content, the bags are washable, foldable and durable. One bag can replace hundreds of single-use plastic or paper bags. The bags have been made available as part of the New York State Bag Reduction Law and are funded through a portion of the Tompkins County $.05 bag fee.

“Since the plastic bag ban, there has been a reduction in litter. The reusable bags will help make practicing sustainability easier for all Tompkins County residents,” said Leo Riley, TCRMM Director.

TCRMM is prioritizing agencies and organizations that did not previously receive bags this year in order to maximize equitable distribution.

“Since the plastic bag ban, there has been a reduction in litter. The reusable bags will help make practicing sustainability easier for all Tompkins County residents,” said Leo Riley, TCRMM Director.

TCRMM promotes waste reduction by encouraging residents to skip the fee and bring a bag. Need some tips to help build the habit?

  • Store your bags by the door
  • Keep your bags in the car
  • And bring extra bags in your backpack

Since 2020, TCRMM has distributed over 19,000 reusable bags through a network of over 30 local agencies and organizations.
